The Jaffna University is holding an exhibition at its fine arts department until 31 August that displays the 200 year history of upcountry Tamils.

Exhibits include cooking utensils, wrist watches, old documents and photographs, tea baskets and religious tools of this community also known as Malaiyaha Tamils.

A support-seeking march by them to mainly demand citizenship rights took place last month from Thalaimannar to Matale with 11 demands being placed before the government.

Among these demands are the recognition of their history, struggle and economic contributions, a separate identity but with equal rights and access to education, health and social security.

A reasonable payment for their work, workplace dignity, protection and equal salaries for men and women, land, livelihood and housing rights and the protection and promotion of their culture are also included.
