Murdered journalist Dharmaratnam Sivaram was remembered in the north and the east on his 19th death anniversary.

The media clubs of Jaffna, Vavuniya and Batticaloa held commemorative events, while another was organized at an ongoing protest site in Vavuniya.

Floral tributes were paid to a photograph of Sivaram and a simultaneous campaign launched to demand justice for all murdered journalists.

Journalist Freddie Gamage from Colombo, who attended the events, said both the southern polity and media were silent about the issues of the Tamils.

A continuous struggle is needed to ensure them justice, since political parties cannot be trusted to fight on their behalf, he said.

Sivaram, a senior journalist also known as Taraki, was abducted on April 28, 2005 by persons on a white van in front of Bambalapitiya police station.

His dead body was found just 500 metres away from the parliamentary complex in Sri Jayewardenepura on the following day.

At the time, he was the chief editor of Tamilnet website, after having previously served at ‘The Island’, ‘Sunday Times’, ‘Daily Mirror’, ‘Veerakesari’ and ‘Tamil Times’.
