The government has planned a proposal to vest the MPs of the respective areas with the duties and responsibilities of the provincial ministries in order to reactivate the functions of the provincial councils (PCs) that remain inactive since 2017, ‘Deshaya’ newspaper reports.

The act governing PCs provides for the appointment of four ministers, in addition to a chief minister.

Since the dissolution of the PCs, powers of their ministers are enforced by the respective governors.

The Presidential Secretariat has already sought advice from the attorney general with regard to the legality of the proposal.

The issue of the PCs too, will be on the agenda, when president Ranil Wickremesinghe meets Indian premier Narendra Modi for talks during a tour of India starting on July 20.
