Fishermen in the north have expressed concerns over a claim by the area’s authorities that Indian poaching is the only issue faced by them.

President of the fisheries associations collective, Annalingam Annarasa, at a media briefing on 01 January, explained their numerous other concerns.

He said the districts’ coordinating committee meeting is confined for the political authority only.

Fisheries associations should be invited for the meeting to discuss their concerns.

There, political party representatives and their supporters say Indian poaching is the only issue.

Dynamite fishing, use of local trawlers and fishing nets should all be banned, said Annnarasa.

He also raised the damage caused by sea leech farms, saying that of the 700 in Jaffna alone, 150 are unauthorized ones.

Petitions given to the provincial governor and the district secretary have yielded no results, he said.
