The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) handed over 50 computers and other electronic devices to the Justice Ministry,
the Department of Community Development and the Department of Prisons, to facilitate the performance of their duties, at the Justice Ministry yesterday (02).
The event was held under the patronage of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC and US Ambassador Julie Chung.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr. Rajapakshe said that the continuous support provided by the UNODC for maintaining the judicial process in a better way on a continuous basis is commendable.
The Minister said that as in many countries, the prisons in this country are overcrowded and for that reason, they have to face a problematic situation in providing the necessary facilities to the inmates, but certain measures are being taken to address the situation and support is expected for those measures to be implemented even in the future from the UNODC.
Justice Ministry Secretary M.N. Ranasinghe, UNODC Head of the Global Maritime Crime Programme Siri Bjune, UNODC Inter-regional Adviser and Team Leader Phillipp Meissner Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya and state officials representing the Justice Ministry, Department of Community Development and Department of Prisons joined the event.
