Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has condoled over the passing of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan.

“My deepest condolences to the family and friends of veteran TNA leader R. Sampanthan,” Modi said on X.

The Indian premier said he will always cherish fond memories of meetings with the late politician.

Sampanthan relentlessly pursued a life of peace, security, equality, justice and dignity for the Tamil nationals of Sri Lanka and that he will be deeply missed by his followers in Sri Lanka and India, he added.

India’s external affairs minister S. Jaishankar too, said on X that he was deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of the Sri Lankan Tamil leader.

He recalled his many meetings and conversations with him over several decades. "He dedicated his entire life fighting for the equality, dignity and justice for Tamils in Sri Lanka," EAM Jaishankar added.
