Technology State Minister Kanaka Herath yesterday (18) said that they are working on the introduction of a digital economy policy for Sri Lanka, which does not change when the governments change.
He emphasised that the groundwork for this initiative would begin in the upcoming year, with the allocated provisions outlined in the 2024 budget.
Herath made these remarks during a press conference at the Presidential Media Centre, under the theme ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’.
He said over Rs.2 billion has been allocated in this year’s budget for digitisation and artificial intelligence (AI), with the aim of allowing the Sri Lankan people to experience the benefits of the
ICT revolution by 2025.
He further said until President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidency, terms like digitisation and AI were infrequently used in the country.
He credited the president’s foresight for recognising the potential of digitisation and AI in building the economy, noting that these methods have stabilised economies worldwide.
To propel the country forward in line with the developing world, he stressed the need to provide more opportunities for digitalisation and AI, aiming to increase the digital economy’s contribution from 3 percent to 20 percent.
He also highlighted plans to organise an international investment workshop next year, aimed at promoting the digital economy in Sri Lanka.
