A Tamil MP has raised the failure to upgrade a sub divisional secretariat in Ampara for nearly four decades that has created various administrative issues for his people.

TNPF leader Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam told parliament on 28 November that Kalmunai North should be a fully-powered divisional secretariat.

Established in 1986, it was proposed to be made a divisional secretariat at a cabinet meeting in 1993.

The then home affairs ministry secretary has written to the Kalmunai divisional secretary to effect that upgrading, which is yet to be done.

Tamils living there within 29 Grama Seva divisions have to go to the Muslim-dominated Kalmunai North divisional secretariat to get their administrative affairs attended to.

Kalmunai North is devoid of financial and land powers and cannot allocate development funds for Tamil areas.

Ponnambalam urged authorities to upgrade it to the divisional secretariat level.
