Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is now attempting to strip ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa of his civic rights after pro-LTTE and other groups failed to do so, charged MP Namal Rajapaksa.

The MP was responding to questions raised by the media with regard to Premadasa’s signature collection campaign in that regard.

After the end of the war, he said, attempts were made to take his father to military tribunals and there were similar moves during the good governance regime over alleged hidden wealth overseas.

He called all these dramas being played to gain popularity by an opposition that suffers from Rajapaksa-phobia.

On 23 November in Colombo, the SJB started collecting public signatures to a petition that calls for the stripping of civic rights of those who made the country bankrupt.

Speaking on the occasion, Premadasa said they would pressurize the president on the strength of 10 million signatures into stripping them of their rights to vote and contest elections.

The president should no longer be the protector and slave of the Rajapaksa family, he added.
