The leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader Rishad Bathiudeen has had a meeting with Indian high commissioner Santosh Jah last Thursday.
At the meeting, Bathiudeen expressed sincere gratitude to the envoy for the invaluable support extended during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.
He also conveyed his appreciation of the granting of 50,000 houses to war-affected people in the north and the east.
Bathiudeen highlighted the urgent need to address the challenges faced by fishermen affected by coastal erosion in the eastern province, particularly in Oluvil, Ninthavur, Karaithivu, Maligaikadu, Pandiyiruppu, Maruthamunai and Kalmunai.
He requested high commissioner Jha’s intervention during his upcoming visit to the province and assistance in obtaining funds from his government to support these fishermen and to provide necessary support to safeguard their livelihoods.
Bathiudeen emphasized the importance of providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for the war-affected population in the north and urged for collaborative efforts with the Indian government to achieve this goal.
Their discussion also encompassed plans to revitalize the ferry service between Thalaimannar and Rameshwaram, aimed at fostering closer ties and enhancing mutual cooperation between the two countries.
Several other key matters pertaining to the development of the northern and eastern provinces were deliberated upon with focus on leveraging the assistance of the Indian government.
Bathiudeen reaffirmed his commitment to furthering the longstanding and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship, fostering greater cooperation for the prosperity and well-being of both nations.
ACMC chairman M.S.S. Amir Ali also participated in the meeting and engaged in discussions on several matters pertaining to development in Batticaloa district.
