The government expects global technology companies to work in unity when dealing with country specific harmful online content, minister of public security Tiran Alles told Google today (11).

He made these observations when Google's governance affairs and policy head of Asia, Kyle Gardner, called on the minister at the ministry premises.

There has been an attempt to bring all tech companies, civil society and government to a common program that will address Sri Lanka focused harmful content and we expect tech giants like Google to take a more responsible and proactive role, the minister said.

The government is now looking for legal advice on the next steps on the online safety bill and even the judgement has highlighted the need of this Bill, the minister said, noting that further consultations will be held with all relevant stakeholders before the final draft.

"Companies like Google should collaborate with government and civil society in making online a safe place for our societies", the minister added.
