A human chain was organized in Jaffna on 04 October in a show of support for former Mullaitivu magistrate T. Saravanaraja.

Activists of four Tamil parties, lawyers, members of the clergy, university students and civil society members demanded justice for Saravanaraja, who has fled the country allegedly in the face of death threats.

Video footage showed the protestors praying for justice in front of a statue of goddess of justice.

Saravanaraja has tendered his resignation to the Judicial Services Commission, citing threats to his life, and left the country.

Head of the lawyers association in Vavuniya Anton Punidanayagam said they would wear black facemasks for the next two weeks as a mark of protest.

MP C.V. Vigneswaran said the ex-magistrate’s matter showed that anarchy prevailed among the majority community.

He demanded a government investigation against those who threatened him.

MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan said an international mediation that goes beyond the UN and the Human Rights Council was needed to ensure justice for Tamils.
