An inquiry taking place at a police station cannot be videoed and uploaded to social media, a lawyer says.

Lawyer Prathibha Mahanama Hewa referred to such an instance, involving an investigation into a complaint by a man against his mother at Veyangoda police.

The aggrieved party can demand compensation under privacy laws from the person who had released the proceedings to social media, he said.

Police officers found to be in the wrong in such incidents too, can be dealt with by the police commission, said the lawyer.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said a separate investigation was underway into the releasing of the said video to social media.
