A remembrance took place on 15 May for the 39th year for 36 civilians said to have been killed by the Navy at Delft, Jaffna.

Lamps were lit and flowers offered at a memorial near the islet’s jetty by participants.

They remembered the children, women and men who boarded ‘Kumudini’ on 15 May 1985 to go to Jaffna to buy essentials.

However, they were attacked at mid-sea by men believed to be from the Nainativu Navy camp.

In addition to the fatalities, 22 were seriously wounded.

At the remembrance, a book of poems written by V. Rudran was launched.

Also, participants were treated to porridge that has come to be known as Mullivaikkal kanji.
