A mere 31,000 persons out of a total of 500,000 persons registered for personal income tax payments make their due payments, said Mahindananda Aluthgamage, chairman of the sectoral oversight committee on national economic and physical plan.

He also said a 82 per cent of the revenue comes from 382 limited liability companies out of 105,000 such institutions registered for income tax payment.

The committee met on July 06 to discuss ways and means of recovering Rs. 904,000 million defaulted income tax payments.

Aluthgamage said discussions were under way with the justice minister to amend the inland revenue act and to abolish the tax appeals committee in order to recover these dues.

The head of the inland revenue department commended the sectoral oversight committee in its commitment to make the department more productive.

He said the projected tax revenue target for the first half of 2023 has been met.
