Former President and incumbent Opposition Parliamentarian Maithripala Sirisena has filed a motion in the Supreme Court (SC) requesting that he be allowed to pay Rs. 85 million (Mn) of the Rs. 100 million compensation ordered to be paid to the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks and their families, in 10 installments of Rs. 8.5 million each, from 30 June 2024 to 20 June 2033. Sirisena has already paid Rs. 15 million.

Accordingly, ahead of the deadline for the payment of Rs. 100 million today (12), Sirisena had paid Rs. 15 million as compensation on 28 June, on the orders of the SC, and filed a motion requesting that he be allowed to pay the remaining sum in 10 installments of Rs. 8.5 million from 30 June 2024 to 20 June 2033.

Meanwhile, an official of the Office for Reparations said that former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director and incumbent Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG - Administration) Nilantha Jayawardena has deposited Rs. 4.1 million to the Fund as of yesterday (11). He was ordered by the SC to pay a compensation sum of Rs. 75 million.
