Health minister Keheliya Rambukwella admits a shortage of 190 varieties of medicines at the central medicines storage.
According to him, a mechanism is in place to prevent a future shortage, while making procurements more efficient.
By the year end, 20 varieties of medicines will be produced locally, said Rambukwella at a media briefing.
TU leader levels accusations
Meanwhile, health sector trade unionist Ravi Kumudesh accused the minister of having ignored their warning three months ago of a shortage of 200 varieties.
"It should be looked into why the minister is not receiving the information the health TU receives", he added.
