The Election Committee convenes a meeting today (07) at 10.30 am to fix a fresh date for the local government polls.
Also summoned for the discussion are the finance ministry secretary, government printer and the police chief.
Members of the commission are due to meet separately.
Local election monitor PAFFREL’s executive director Rohana Hettiarachchi expects the LG polls to take place most likely in April.
Meanwhile, opposition MPs are planning to meet the Election Commission today to raise the matter.
Nine opposition MPs have written to its chairman calling for the holding of the election before March 20.
Marikkar warns of street protests
In the meantime, deputy national organizer of the SJB S.M. Marikkar accused the president of plotting to put off the election even after the Supreme Court issued an order to facilitate its holding.
The new election date should be announced today by the election commission, or else a fight to win it will be taken to the streets together with the people, he said.
