Social media has become very curious over the presence of the head of an independent commission at an airport reception for SLPP national organiser Basil Rohana Rajapaksa.
Arriving at Katunayake yesterday (20) on board an Emirates Airline flight from Dubai, Rajapaksa was welcomed by party activists, but eyebrows were raised when the chairman of National Police Commission Chandra Fernando was seen among them.
The independence of the commission he chairs has now come into question.
Dual citizenship holder Basil Rajapaksa resigned from his parliamentary seat on July 09 in the face of anti-government protests and left the country on September 09.
He had been in the US for more than two months before coming to Sri Lanka.
SLPP general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam told the media that his arrival will speed up the party’s plans for future elections.
Since Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected president with the SLPP MPs’ votes, some cast doubts if police commission chief Fernando had gone to see the party’s national organizer with the consent of the top rung.
