Willie Gamage has tendered his resignation to the secretary to the president as governor of the southern province effective from 02 May.
Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, presently governor in the northwest, is to be appointed in his place.
Nazir Ahmed is likely to succeed him in the north west.
However, Buddhist monks in the northwest are going to ask the president to keep Abeywardena posted there.
