Deshabandu Tennakoon has been appointed the acting police chief in order to implement the programme to curb drugs and the underworld, said public security minister Tiran Alles.

The minister was speaking at a meeting in Panadura to raise awareness on community police committees.

“Our biggest challenge was to curb the rampant drugs menace and underworld activities. A committee including the acting IGP was appointed to make several months of study and a programme was planned thereafter. I asked the president to appoint him as the acting IGP to implement that programme,” said Alles.

He claimed to have put a stop to the practice of releasing arrested criminals due to pressure from various persons, and promised to act firmly in his capacity.

Speaking further, he said ‘Yukthiya’ has been able to bring about a big transformation to save the future generation.

The online safety act was introduced to regulate abusers of social media, which is being manipulated at the instigation of certain foreign forces, he said.

Social media could be used even to topple a government, said Alles, adding this act has become a problem for abusers of social media only.
