Various industries numbering 263,200 were closed in the past four years with the collapse of the national economy, said the Department of Census and Statistics in a report.

At the beginning of 2019, the country had 1.303 million micro, small and medium scale industries, but that fell to 1.037 million, Prof. Wasantha Athukorale of University of Peradeniya quoted from the report.

According to him, 204,100 of these factories had been permanently closed, while 59,100 had suspended their operations.

In all, 254,700 are micro industries, 7,300 small industries and 1,100 medium scale ones, he said.
