The Ceylon Teachers’ Union has expressed concerns over a possible disruption to school education as a result of the VAT increase that affects the price of an exercise book to school transport fares.

The 15 per cent VAT has now gone up to 18 pc, with 97 goods and services newly-added to the list.

CTU secretary Joseph Stalin told the media on 02 January that a ‘heartless’ government ignored calls by all sectors not to burden the education sector with taxes.

He questioned if the government intended to destroy education of the poor children.

Stalin also questioned the success of a nutritional programme for 1.1 million schoolchildren by allotting a mere Rs. 100 per child.
