Congestion in the prisons has been identified as a long-lasting issue in the prisons in Sri Lanka.
A committee chaired by a Supreme Court judge was appointed to furnish appropriate recommendations for legal provisions to keep suspects and offenders under house arrest instead of being remanded.
The cabinet of ministers has approved a resolution furnished by the minister of prison activities to instruct the legal draftsman to prepare a draft bill based on the report furnished by that committee.
