Justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe is to introduce a new act to resolve issues of the indigenous Veddah community.

A committee headed by the Wildlife Ministry secretary has formulated a report in that regard in consultation with the stakeholders.

That report was discussed at a meeting at the parliamentary complex yesterday (11).

The minister said 15 institutions have been consulted for the purpose of preparing the report aimed at resolving the issues of the Veddah community.

He said the livelihoods of the community should be safeguarded and a committee be set up to coordinate institutions responsible for their daily living.

Rajapakshe instructed officials to formulate the draft act within a month.

Veddah chieftain Uruwarige Wanniya said he hoped for permanent solutions for his people this time, after failures in the past.
