The president has curtailed the salaries of state sector employees in the guise of granting them a pay hike, teacher trade unionist Joseph Stalin charged.

After they asked for an increase of Rs. 20,000, it has been proposed to grant half of that, while raising their pension contribution by two percent to eight pc, he noted.

Stalin said the grant was wholly inadequate.

Delivering the budget speech on 13 November, president Ranil Wickremesinghe announced a Rs. 10,000 increase in the cost of living allowance for state sector employees from January.

He said it will begin to be added to the salary from April.

Stalin said further that no attention has been paid to education from this budget.
