Labour minister Manusha Nanayakkra has lamented an absence of a voice on behalf of the domestic servants “slaving for a menial pay” locally.

But, there are enough NGOs to speak for those employed overseas, he said at a meeting.

Nanayakkara promised to resolve issues and grant job dignity to local domestic servants.

He said the cabinet has given six months to prepare a social security mechanism for them that will ensure a pension or a retirement gratuity upon reaching 55 years of age.

Also looked into will be their working conditions, leave entitlements, salary scales, training etc., he said.

A professional organization for domestic servants should be in place as well to speak up on their behalf, the minister added.
