The struggle to save the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has fallen victim to a conspiracy, said health sector trade unionist Ravi Kumudesh.

Accused in the theft of data from the health sector database are trying to be back at the helm of the NMRA in an attempt to cover up their wrongs, he charged.

Those who respond to the substandard immunoglobulin imports, not the first fraud to be caught by the NMRA, should answer for the data theft too, said Kumudesh.

It is two years since the criminal case into the data theft, but the government analyst is yet to submit a report, with the accused making a comeback in a new disguise, he said.

Opposes clinical specialists in management

The TU leader went onto say that skilled managers are not allowed in the decision-making process that has become conventional and infested with uncontrollable corruption, fraud, wastage and irregularities.

The situation worsens with the appointment of clinical specialists to top management positions, he said, adding that it is folly to think that medical doctors becoming either the health minister or the NMRA chairman will solve matters.
