President Ranil Wickremesinghe should understand how to go about dealing in coalition politics, said SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa.

“He should understand, being a veteran politician, to deal in unity and through dialogue, when doing coalition politics,” Rajapaksa told the media after minor changes were effected to the cabinet.

The MP said he did not see it as a reshuffle, but as an internal exchange of ministerial positions, which the president had the right to do.

But, at the same time, the president should have consulted other parties in advance, he said.

It is wrong to think that exchanging cabinet positions can resolve health issues, economic crisis etc., added Rajapaksa.

He said he disapproved of the SLPP getting the blame for the government’s wrongs, while the praise went elsewhere.

Rajapaksa hoped at least the budget for 2024 would bring relief for the people.

The SLPP is faulted for increasing electricity, water tariffs, taxes while new taxes are proposed, but nothing is done to control the cost of living.

Decisions are taken without consulting affiliate parties, and if they prove correct, one group takes the credit, but if they are wrong, the SLPP gets the blame, he added.
