The government will be dissolved following the presentation of the budget for next year, ‘Ada Derana’ reports quoting political sources.
Expecting such an eventuality, the SLPP is already having internal discussions on how to contest a general election that is expected in March 2024.
After holding a presidential election in September or October of that year, parliamentary polls cannot take place before 31 December.
In the event of a general election in March, no party will secure a majority power, with a coalition government the likelihood.
President’s assurance
Incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe said the presidential polls would take place next year as per constitutional provisions.
That will be followed by a general election and provincial council polls in early 2025, he told the UNP’s special convention on 21 October.
