Tamil dairy farmers in the east are on an indefinite protest to demand the freeing of their grasslands taken over by Sinhala farmers.

The action that started on 15 September in front of a school at Sittandy in Batticaloa preceded a failed meeting two days earlier with district secretary Kamalawathi Padmarajini.

The DS said she could not resolve their problem.

Tamil dairy farmers claim that around 2,500 acres of grassland are being occupied by Sinhala Chena cultivators.

East governor Anuradha Yahampath has granted land at Madavanai to 150 Sinhala families to grow maize and other crops.

Around 900 dairy farmers own more than 250,000 milch cows there.
