Part of the Madu Road reserve has been released to the people through a gazette notification, said the Wildlife Department.
It said 56.8 hectares were thus released at the request of the area residents.
However, the Centre for Environmental Justice said it was against the law to release part of the reserve.
Its president Ravindranath Dabare said strong action would be taken against the move.
