Sex education for children from preschool to grade 13 will begin next month, according to a decision by the parliamentary forum on children.

The National Institute of Education, in consultation with health experts and officials of the children’s affairs and health ministries, is currently preparing 14 textbooks for the purpose.

Each textbook will be different from the others and will provide additional reading, said MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne.

The textbooks will first be made available online, with the assistance of NGOs to be sought for their printing thereafter, she has told ‘Aruna’ newspaper.

She added that an exact date for the commencement of sex education in schools will be decided at a meeting next week to review progress in the preparation of the curriculum.

A previous move to provide sex education to grade seven students through a textbook ‘Hathey Apey Potha’ was abandoned due to opposition by some.
