As many as 1.2 million direct employment opportunities have been lost in the local construction sector, according to a parliamentary committee dealing with the economic crisis.
The figure is much higher with the loss of indirect jobs.
A committee recommendation has gone to the government to provide immediate relief to these affected persons.
In addition to job-cuts, construction firms have also advertised to sell their valuable machinery overseas.
The state owes billions of rupees to these firms for the road and other construction work they have carried out.
