One-third of the cases pending before high courts are on child abuse and rape of women, said justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

According to him, it was unfortunate that 9,800 out of a total 29,700 cases relate to the exploitation of children and women.

In this deteriorated society, prevention is more important than punishment, he said.

The law alone cannot bring society on the correct path, and all should work for society’s well-being, he said at the opening of a new court complex in Ratnapura yesterday (11) presided by president Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The four storey court complex built at a cost of Rs. 1,500 million houses two each of high courts, magistrate courts and district courts, one civil appellate court, a labour tribunal, a legal aid centre and a community correction office.
