At least 13 passengers have died and 81 others sustained injuries in three separate road accidents, police said.
Eleven of them were killed when a private bus on its way from Kaduruwela to Akkarapattu crashed into a bridge at Manampitiya and fell into the Kotaleeya Oya around 7.30 pm yesterday (09).
Police said 40 other were critically injured and hospitalized at Manampitiya and Polonnaruwa.
The bus had been carrying 67 people, all of them residents of Akkarapattu.
At Ambanpola, two died and 29 wounded when a bus carrying pilgrims back from Kuragala sacred site crashed into a container truck parked by the roadside early this morning.
The dead are two men aged 71 and 32 years.
The injured are receiving treatment at Galgamuwa and Ambanpola hospitals.
Meanwhile, a private bus veered off the road and overturned at Dunukedeniya in Talawakele yesterday afternoon, leaving 12 injured.
The bus had been taking 25 estate workers back home after work.
Police said the injured were admitted to Kotmale Hospital.
