The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to oppose domestic debt restructuring (DDR) as the government has laid its hands on the EPF and the share market, said its media spokesman S.M. Marikkar.

At the House vote on the proposal on the DDR, the party will vote against it, he said at a media briefing yesterday (29).

He also revealed the government’s real intention of convening parliament at the weekend, purportedly to discuss the DDR.

Its main aim is to sabotage the formation of the most extensive opposition alliance, said Marikkar.

President’s assurance

Three days earlier, president Ranil Wickremesinghe said the DDR was taking place while restructuring 17 billion US dollars out of a total foreign debt of 41.5 billion USD.

However, it will not affect the banking system’s stability or the pension funds, he added.
