As many as 1,794 vehicles belonging to the Health Ministry have gone missing, said COPA chairman Lasantha Alagiyawanne, who summoned its officials for a meeting.

Quoting a report by the auditor general, state minister Alagiyawanne said 259 of these vehicles have been transferred to outsiders.

A ministry official said the Department of Motor Traffic has been asked to suspend the issuance of revenue licenses to the missing 1,115 motorcycles and 679 cars.

Information is available only about 425 cars and 11 motorcycles.

Most of the missing motorcycles would have been taken away by field officers upon their retirement as per agreements.

According to COPA, most of these vehicles were registered between 1950 and 1996.

Its chairman instructed officials to take steps to prevent state-owned vehicles from going missing.
