An area Tamil politician in the north has accused MP Udaya Gammanpila of inciting racism by visiting a contentious religious site in Mullaitivu.

Former northern provincial councilor Thurairasa Raviharan leveled the allegation during a protest yesterday (21) against Gammanpila’s visit to Kurunthurmalai.

“MPs who should be in Colombo come here and incite racism. They do it to protect their votes. They are the racist politicians,” said Raviharan.

He said neither Buddhist monks nor archaeology officials were respecting the court decisions against the construction of a stupa at Kurunthurmalai.

Accompanied by Buddhist monks and a media team from Colombo, Gammanpila visited the stupa and called for a dialogue to resolve the issue.

He accused northern politicians of creating trouble.
