The Members of Parliament bade farewell to former speaker Joseph Michael Perera, who passed away aged 81.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, deputy speaker Ajith Rajapakse, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and ministers were among those who paid their last respects to the ex-speaker.
Also present were former presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena, parliament officials and members of Perera’s family.
The remains were received in front of the parliamentary complex and were taken on red carpet to a special hall.
The president paid his last respects and the reading of a message of condolences followed.
