The Election Commission today (10) gave an undertaking before theSupreme Court that it would take steps to hold the local government polls.

Lawyer for the EC, Saliya Peiris, did so when the SC took up two writ petitions that sought an order to the EC to hold the election.

Lawyers for the petitioners, who are a group of MPs led by Prof. G.L. Peiris, said they were satisfied with the undertaking. Thereafter, the SC terminated the hearing.

Meanwhile, the SC is taking up a petition filed by a retired military officer, Col. W. Wijesundara, seeking an order to put off the LG polls.
