Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe said today (07) that he strongly rejected a request by president Ranil Wickremesinghe to withdraw the interim cricket committee he has appointed.

Making a statement in parliament, the minister said, “The president asked me to withdraw the committee. I told him to remove me and take any decision, but that I will not withdraw it.”

He referred to the injunction imposed by courts against the interim committee and said he would make a statement tomorrow.

The sports minister went onto allege that the president and his chief of staff Sagala Ratnayaka had made uncalled for suggestions when he attempted to amend the Sports Act.

A Ratnayaka-led committee had sent him a set of proposals, which would have allowed thieves a free reign, the minister added.
