The United Nations has been urged to formulate a mechanism to monitor violence against Sri Lankan journalists and report to the international community on a regular basis.

The call came following a protest against the recent attack on a freelance journalist in Jaffna.

Journalists, politicians and civil society activists took part in the agitation at Jaffna bus stand on 19 June as courts gave bail to three suspects arrested over the attack on Thambidurai Pratheepan’s house.

They handed over a letter to the UNHCR to be forwarded to the UN secretary general, detailing their requests.

Calling for immediate steps to ensure the safety of journalists, it also recommends legal, safehouse and other facilities for them.
