The court of appeal has permitted the Customs director general to carry out a fresh investigation into a Rs. 11 million fraud in the import of 1,728 BMWs under duty-free permits for pubic servants.

The court dismissed a writ petition against holding such an inquiry, filed by Prestige Automobile Pvt. Ltd.

Making submissions on behalf of the customs chief, deputy solicitor general Sumathi Dharmawardena said a report by the German Customs indicates financial irregularities in the import of these vehicles.

The Customs has conducted an inquiry against the petitioner alleging it had shown lower value in the import of the BMWs during 2011-14.

The vehicles were ordered to be released with the payment of a fine of Rs. 100,000 per vehicle.

The petitioner went to court against that order.
