The annual event at Mullivaikkal goes beyond a mere remembrance for the civilians who died in war, said Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) MP Selvarajah Kajendran.
It is also an opportunity to make a united demand for the right to self-determination and a federal-based solution for Tamils, he told the media in Jaffna.
They faced a genocide for rejecting a unitary state, he said.
According to correspondents, arrangements are being made for the 15th remembrance at Mullivaikkal.
The day should also be used as an opportunity to send a clear message to India, US and other western countries that Tamils would never give up their stand until the political solution they demand is given, said Kajendran.
The government has not allotted adequate funds to rebuild the two war-torn provinces, while repression of Tamils continues in various forms, he added.
