The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) still has time to name its presidential candidate, said chief government whip Prasanna Ranatunga.
Party leader Mahinda Rajapaksa will take a good decision with regard to the candidate, he told journalists.
Ranatunga was speaking after SLPP MPs met at Nelum Mawatha headquarters, chaired by founder Basil Rajapaksa.
Also, the party is implementing a programme to enable its supporters to go out in the open without fear.
Meanwhile, Ranatunga said in parliament that only a presidential election would take place this year as per constitutional provisions.
He was responding to a question raised by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.
