A fresh protest is underway in Jaffna for media freedom and to seek justice for journalists who either went missing or were murdered while reporting the war.
It comes in the wake of Sri Lanka dropping further to 150th place among 180 countries in the media freedom index compiled by Reporters Sans Frontiers.
It is a drop of 15 places from the 135th in 2023.
On world media freedom day on 03 May, the Jaffna Media Club launched the agitation.
Its president Arumugam Sabeswaran charged the state mechanism was repressing the media and its workers in a different way now.
According to JDS, 44 journalists had either been abducted order murdered in Sri Lanka.
A majority of them were from the north.
