Former Kalutara District MP and Deputy Minister Palitha Kumara Thewarapperuma passed away at the age of 64, today (16).

He had been electrocuted while attempting to connect two electrical circuits at his home and has succumbed after being admitted to the Nagoda hospital, according to family sources.

Born on May 3, 1960, Palitha Thewarapperuma was a former Member of Parliament of the United National Party from Kalutara and was a former Deputy Minister of internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs in the United National Party led national government in 2015.

Thewarapperuma was among the local masses for his social service activities and philanthropy.

He rose to fame among people in the country especially during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka for having provided food, dry rations and other necessities to the rural population of the Kalutara District.

His body is being kept at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.
