From 2026, pre-school education is to be made mandatory for all children aged four years.
The education ministry will reorganize and regulate the preschool system for the purpose, said Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara of the education reforms expert committee.
Most preschools are run privately at present, and they will be registered and regulated by local government bodies.
Also, schools will have separate preschool units in areas without the facilities required.
Every preschool teacher will be given proper training, with one-year diploma to be made compulsory.
