University teachers will get their study allowance raised from the present 144 per cent to 209 pc, the cabinet has decided.
Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Sampath Amaratunga has informed the universities that the increase would be effective from 01 January 2024.
However, this is not mentioned in the cabinet decision notice.
Attempts to reach Prof. Amaratunga for a comment were unsuccessful.
Secretary of the Federation of University Teachers' Associations Dr. Athulasiri Samarakoon said the increase in the allowance would be treated as an attempt to prevent brain drain.
However, better steps are needed to prevent the collapse of state universities, he said.
